Bootiful cost savings at Bernard Matthews Foods

Savings in time and people has resulted since Bernard Matthews Foods installed two Streamfeeder® machines at its new Dunstable production site. According to Trevor Preston, maintenance manager at the company, when the next new line goes into the factory, he will definitely ask for a Streamfeeder to be included.

Although Bernard Matthews is a name synonymous with turkey products, the Dunstable site manufactures a huge range of pastries including sausage rolls and pasties. The Streamfeeder automatically feeds base cards for these products just prior to flowrapping. It has replaced a manual operation and so not only has one person per line been saved, the line also runs faster.

“Currently we are running at about 90/a minute, a similar speed to our manual operation,” says Preston, “but long term, we are aiming to reach 120/ minute.” Trials at these speeds have already been completed successfully.

Supplied by UK distributors Partners in Packaging, the Streamfeeder model ST1250 base-card feeder uses company’s patented Differential Friction Technology™ that ensures precise product separation and feeding. As Preston says, the machines are easy to use and perform really well.

Duncan Macintyre, Managing Director of Partners in Packaging says: “This is the first time Bernard Matthews has used Streamfeeder technology anywhere in the business, but the equipment is certainly bringing cost and time benefits, as it does in many manufacturing operations.”
